We start with Missy Hyatt in a bubble bath informing us that this show has explicit content and warning us that reviewer discresion is advised. We then go to a TNA style video package, that's all about champions having the heart of champion, they run down all the matches and then they highlight the main contenders for the Royal Rumble, it's different but it's a pretty damn good package.
Jeff Jarrett vs. Ahmed Johnson
God I can't believe after watching the Jarrett DVD that even Jeff thought this character had main even potential. Johnson dodges a closeline and unloads, Jarrett immediately bails and runs from the ring to avoid Johnson. Jeff catches Ahmed coming in and lays in a series of knees, Jeff tires a hip toss but Johnson counters into one of his own. Jeff gets a side headlock but Johnson powers out and throws Jeff awkwardly. Johnson misses a blind charge before hitting a big closeline and horrid shoulder tackle. Johnson gets a nice powerslam for a near fall before hitting a big flying closeline. Ahmed goes for a cross body but Jeff dodges and Ahmed gets hungs upside down by the hand in ropes.
Jeff kicks Ahmed down from ringside and throws him shoulder first into the steel steps. Jeff returns to the ring and its rope rider and struting time. Jeff then comes off the second rope with a series of axe handles but Ahmed is no selling everything and on the fourth attempt Ahmed catches his and hits a horrible inverted atomic drop. Ahmed follows up with a brutal closeline and a big closeline. Johnson then follows up with a tope suicida killing Jarrett. Ahmed rolls Jeff back in but misses the Swanton Bomb and Jeff immediately locks in the Figure Four Leglock. Ahmed turns it over very quickly and makes the ropes.
Jeff tries to reapply the hold but Ahmed shoots him off and Jeff goes crashing to the outside. Jeff gets the guitar and comes off the top rope with a flying guitar shot that absolutely kills Ahmed Johnson that looked awesome, and the crowd are shocked by that, Ahmed gets up and chases Jeff backstage as the referee announces a DQ.
That was a good opener, fast paced no rest holds with some good athleticism but also some sloppy moments from Johnson. You can definitely see what Vince saw in Johnson at the time. Fun opener. (**)
Kevin Nash is bakstage and he cuts a very good very cool promo saying that he doesn't fear Vader or Shawn Michaels the only thing he's worried about is that he's not the number one contender.
Sunny leads the body donnas to the ring and she looks insanely hot, it's ridiculous, and she says she has skip, she has chip and soon she'll have the tag team championship.
WWE World Tag Team Title
The Body Donnas vs. The Smoking Gunns
Sunny says she can't help it if they love me as she walks down the ring steps. Skip has Billy in and side headlock but he's shot off and Billy hits a big shoulder tackle, Skip replies with a flying headscissors and Billy immediately replies with a back body drop. Billy misses cross body and goes flying to the outside. The Body Donnas hit a double elbow on Billy, but Bart helps out sling shotting both Bonna Donnas to the outside. Bart then holds the top rope down and Billy hits a flying cross body to the outside onto both Body Donnas.
Billy cleans house with a a series of right hands. Sunny blows Billy some kisses and shakes her arse to distract them. Chip tags in as does Bart, Bart no sells all of Chip's offence before unloading, Skip tags in and scores with a closeline. Billy Gunn dropkicks Skip into a spinebuster closeline combination, Sunny gets on the apron and distracts the referee but Billy knocks her off the apron by mistake, Sunny acts hurt and then Billy comes over and checks on her allowing the Body Donnas to double team, Sunny then starts girly celebrating while Skip scores with plancha on Billy.
Back in the ring, Skip tags out and suplexes Chip ontop of Billy for a two count. Chip scores with a body slam before tagging in Skip and gut wrench bombing Skip onto Billy, that was a nice spot. The Body Donnas double team Billy in the corner before going for a snapmare and a chinlock. Billy fights out but Skip tags in and hits a fist drop from the second rope for a two count. Chip tags back in and the Donnas score with double team flapjack and we go to a lovely shot of Sunny acting sexy at ringside. We then get an incredibly horrible looking three way collison spot.
HOT TAG! Bart is on fire cleaning house with right hands and a huge back body drop and then a reverse elbow gets a two count. The Body Donnas are given a meeting of minds and then the Gunns hit a Guillotine leg drop side walk slam combo, they have the three but Sunny has the referee distracted. Skip hits a diving headbutt to break the pinfall and gets the cover himself for a 2.999999 count. Sunny just can't believe it. The Donnas hits a double back body drop, and they go for a double suplex but Billy breaks it up with a spear for the and Bart falls on top for the 1-2-3. Sunny is very unhappy but still incredibly hot.
Good tag team match with some unique tag team offence from the Body Donnas, Sunny was superb at ringside and the fake swerve finish was a nice touch. (**1/2)
We then go to one of the infamous Billion Ted Rasslin War Room skits before we go to a good recap of the Razor Ramon-Goldust feud.
WWE Intercontinental Title
Goldust vs. Razor Ramon
Terry Runnells acompanies Goldust to the ring and it sounds like this is her debut from Vince's reaction on commentary. Goldusts plays to the crowd to a round of boos before Razor throws a toothpick in Goldust's face. Goldust avoids locking up and tries to psyche out Razor with some poses and by bending over. Ramon grabs and arm wring and repeatedly slams Goldust down before getting an arm bar and slapping the crap out of Goldust. Goldust gets a standing switch and starts feeling up Razor Ramon's chest and that draws a big "Razor" chant. They show a slow motion replay of that?
Goldust tries some more gay tactics so Razor shoves him down hard. Razor gets his arm wrench and shoulder thrusts before Goldust counters and hits a huge bitch slap, Ramon replies with a drop toe hold and he slaps the crap out of Goldust, he then gives him one huge bitch slap and then he slaps Goldust's arse and he acts like he likes it before Razor unloads with a huge right hand. Goldust then bails to ringside and hides behind Terry until Razor backs off.
They do an awkward head lock head scissor exchange before Scott scores with another huge right hand. Goldust again bails and hides behind Terry who looks stoned. Goldust returns to the ring and blows a kiss to Ramon. Goldust again puts on the breaks and plays to the crowd but Ramon kills him with a huge closeline sending Goldust crashing to the outside and yet again he hides behind Terry. Razor has had enough and he lifts Terry out the way but that allows Goldust to attack from behind and send him into the steel steps.
Goldust unloads with a series of uppercuts before returning to the ring and coming off the top rope with a flying axe handle. Goldust hits a series of hard Irish whips before nailing a dropkick for a two count. Goldust then scores with a very nice slingshot back suplex for a near fall. Terry calls Razor over and blows Goldust in Razor's eyes. Ramon goes for a back body drop but Goldust counters with a head pound and a swinging neck breaker. Goldust then slaps on the sleeper hold and Razor begins to fade.
Razor fights up and distracts the referee allowing him to score with a mule kick to balls on Goldust and both men are down. Goldust crawls over and gets a nearfall, Razor then unloads with his huge right hans before blocking a hip toss and turning it into a chokeslam for a near fall. Scott Hall then hits the fallaway slam for a near fall. Goldust goes to the top rope but gets crotched by Ramon, Razor then hits a super back suplex. Terry is in the ring and she pretends to have a twisted ankle to distract the referee. The 1-2-3 Kid then runs out and scores with the top rope spinning heel kick on Razor and Goldust falls on top for the win.
The match told a good story and served as very good introduction for Terry Runnells/Marlena but it was more psychology and storytelling and very little wrestling, the screw job finish doesn't help either. Fine match. (**)
We then go to some pre recorded promos from the Royal Rumble competitors, Shawn Michaels cuts the best promo and he's along with Vader and Diesel are the main focus of the hype.
The Royal Rumble Match
The First Entrant is Hunter Hearst Helmsley. The Second Entrant is Henry Godwin. Tripper unloads and kicks the crap out of Godwin before scoring with a hard Irish whip but Henry Godwin explodes with closeline and then a big back body drop. Tripper then tries to toss Godwin, Godwin fights him off and scores with a body slam.
The Third Entrant is Bob Buckland. Bob comes in and inexplicably saves Hunter from elimination, Bob nearly tosses Henry before unloading on Triple H with a series of forearms. Tripper decides to keep ups entertained by scoring with a back body drop on Bob Holly before going to more lame toss attempts. Please let the next entrant be good.
The Seventh Entrant is Jake The Snake. Jake gets a big pop and he brings Damien into the ring and the crowd pop huge and all the wrestles bail out of the ring immediately. Jake then puts Damien on Lawler and he sells it brilliantly before Damien gets put away. That was the firs treally memorable entertaining moment. Mable gets tied in the ropes and Mo gets knock off the apron.

Razor Ramon runs out and chases the kid all around the the ring and then through the ring until aload of officials and agents get Ramon to back off but Razor charges through them and nearly gets his hands on the Kid but Mable makes the save and Razor is dragged away. The crowd start a huge "Razor" chant. Bob Holly gives the Kid an Air plane spin and Mable gives the Kid a choke lift. Another really good section the match is picking up.
The Eleventh Entrant is Amuari. Amuari tries to unload on Mable but has little joy. Triple H does a Flair flop in the corner for no real reason. Amuari scores with a nice dropkick on Mable. Mable unloads with a series of chops on Amuari. Amuari goes for a body slam on Mable but of course fail. Hunter lays some boots in on Holly in the corner. The Fifteenth Entrant is One of the Squat Team Members who neither Vince nor Mr. Perfect no the name of! The man with no name unloads on Bob Holly, Vader socres with a big choke slam on Gilbert while The Kid scores with a knee breaker on Triple H and works over the leg, Vader then press salms Gilbert to the outside and tosses the unkown man. Doug Gilbert and the Man with No Name are Eliminated. Yoko and Vader brawl as the countdown clock begins.
The Sixteenth Entrant is the Other Squat Team Member. The Eliminated man and his twin brother return to the ring together. Vader doesn't give a shit and beats the holy hell out of both of them Yoko and Vader then simultanious eliminated both men. Both Squat Team Members are Eliminated. That was pretty funny, the Rumble has certianly improved. 1-2-3 hits a spin kick combo on Holly in the corner.

The Twenty Third Entrant is Karma Mustafa. Shawn gives Bob Holly a ten punch in the corner as the crowd count along. Diesel throws some big rights and on Karma. Tripper is just barely hanging on. It's generic brawling all round right now as the count down clock comes onto screen.

The British Bulldog has been eliminated. Karma then knocks HBK over the top rope but HBK skins the cat, and Diesel tosses Karma on the other side of the ring. Karma has been eliminated. Diesel turns around and is met with an almighty superkick and Diesel goes flying over the top rope. Diesel is Eliminated, Shawn Michaels is the 1996 Royal Rumble Winner.
Not one of the classic Rumbles but it had some great moments, Lawler hiding under the ring, Jake clearing the ring with the snake, HBK eliminating both Yoko and Vader, Vader then going nuts and killing the everyone and going nuts and finally the HBK eliminating Diesel. That said this Rumble started very slowly and didn't really pick up for at least fifteen or twenty minutes and it had a large amount of standing around and brawling. All in all a good Rumble that delivered what it promised but never threatened to be an all time classic. (***1/2)
Post Match: Diesel is absolutely fuming and Diesel kills the bulldog before returning to the ring and looking at Shawn with evil intent, they have an awkward staredown while Shawn's dancing. Dieselt puts his hand in the air, Shawn looks nevrous before accepting a high five and celebrating. Good tease of a potential turn.
Undertaker makes his entrance for the world title but Diesel is waiting for him and they exchange blows before Security drags Diesel away.
WWE World Title
The Undertaker vs. Bret Hart
.
Bret circles Undertaker to start the match Taker's wearing the weird mask, it doesn't look much Taker oh I wonder if this is Brian Lee. Taker no sells all of Bret's offence and throws him hard into the corner and unloads with lefts and rights before applying a choke and a club to the back. Undertaker follows hup with a hard Irish whip and a choke lift. Taker continues to unload with lefts and rights. It's at a methodical Undertaker pace, Taker hits another hard Irish whip Taker then thrills the crowd by applying the Iron claw. THis goes on for quiter a while, Taker takes Bret down to the groun with the claw. Bret makes the ropes but Paul Bearer shoves Bret foot repeatedly off the ropes. Eventually Bret ties himself in the ropes to break the hold. Well that is a horribly dull spot.
.
Taker decides to spice it up with Arm wench and rope walk of Doom, Taker decides we've had far too much fun and reapplies the claw. The crowd come to life but Bret doesn't as Undertaker lifts him up and introduces him to the turnbuckle. Taker runs into a boot and Bret comes off the second rope flying closeline and then Bret closelines Taker over the top rope. Taker lands on his feet but Bret follows up with a plancha and lands in a mount and begins to unload. Bret then leaps off the ring apron but Taker catches him and rams him back first into the ring post. Taker tries snake eyse but Bret slips out and runs Taker face first into the ring post. Taker responds with a big boot before introducing Bret to the guard rail and hitting Bret with a throat thrust. Taker goes for an Irish whip but Bret counters and Taker takes the knee first bump over the steal steps.
.
Bret works over the injured knee on the steel step and begins to stomp away on the knee. Bret returns to the ring and continues to work over the leg of Taker on the ropes. Taker tries to stop Bret but has no luck. Bret gets a series of leg rolls and Taker flops on the canvas unable to get up. Bret decides to thrill the crowd with a leg scissors. Bret begins to drop a series of knees on Taker's leg and every time Taker gets up Bret kicks his leg out. Bret then locks on the figure four leg lock and gets a series of near falls. Paul Bearer tries to uses the urn to bring Taker back to life and Taker manages to reverse the hold. Bret is stuck in the hold and has to scramble to the ropes.
.
Taker makes it to his feet and he's very wobbly. Bret Hart continues to work over the leg on the middle rope this time. Bret drops and elbow drop on the leg of the Undertaker and then reapplies the leg scissors and you can hear the enthusiasm being sucked out of the crowd. The crod come to life as Bret tries to removed the Undertaker's mask. Taker fights him off but Bret goes right back to a series of basic leg locks, Bret really sucks at working the leg. The crowd start a "Rest In Peace" chant as Bret drops a knee of the leg of Taker and then goes back to the leg scissors.
.
Taker kicks Bret hard in the face twice to break the hold and that wakes the crowd up. Taker limps towards Bret and throws Bret through the middle ropes and introduces Bret to the steel step, Taker then chokes Bret with a cable at ringside while Paul Bearer has the referee distracted. Taker then throws Bret over the time keepers table and then tamely stabs Bret with a steel chair while the referee is distracted.
.
Taker returns to the ring at a leisurely pace. Bret dodges a big boot and slugs Taker in the back before hits another leg whip. Bret tries to stand up and Bret kicks the leg out of Taker to a round of boos. Bret continues to work the leg with a series of leg pullers. Bret gets a leg trip and pulls the Taker to the apron and works over Taker's knee on the ringpost. Bret then hits what must be the twentieth leg puler before reapplying the leg scissors. Bret then drops and other knee on Undertaker's knee.
.
Taker fights up and throws a head butt and a leg drop. Taker then hits a tame closeline to a mixed reaction. Taker goes for the Tombstone but Bret slips out onto the apron and then bails to the outside. Taker goes for a hammer blow but Bret counters with a jaw jacker. Taker regains the momentum with a kick to the gut. Taker goes for a back body drop but Bret counteres with a DDT for a two count and Taker sits up. Bret hits a russian leg sweep and Taker sits right up. Bret then hits the bulldog and Taker sits right up. Bret scores with the back breaker and goes to the second rope and scores with the elbow drop. Bret then slaps on the Sharpshooter but Taker counters with a choke and a knee to the gut. Bret dodges a closeline and they go to a double closeline spot and both men are down.
.
Bret is up first and he removes the top turnbuckle, Bret tries to remove the face mask and succeeds. Bret unloads on Taker who looks just fine, Taker hits a hard Irish whip but Bret responds by introducing Taker's exposed face to the exposed ring post. The crowd boo the hell out of Bret. Bret goes for a cross body but Undertaker counters into a Tombstone for a 1-2-Diesel pulls the referee out of the ring. Taker is awarded the match by DQ. Diesel then flips off the Undertaker.
.
That is one of the worst Main Events I've seen in a long time, really puts Triple H-Orton is perspective. Half an hour of horrible wrestling, Taker was always going to stink the joint up but Bret was equally awful, working the leg with a series of uninteresting rest holds and dull offence, he just didn't create the level of movement or interest required to carry a Taker match. Then ontop of that we get a screw job finish just to kill all the crowds enthusiasm. (*)
.
Overall Thoughts: Well the show was going just fine until that final half an hour, the undercard was well paced it was exciting fast paced if unconsiquencial matches. The Rumble match was good but unspectacular not one of the best but a good entertaining hour of wrestling. This undercard all built nicely towards a Main Event anything above three stars and I'd be calling this a really fun show but that match just killed a good show dead. (5/10)
