These Are My Twisted Words - Radiohead
So two weeks ago we got a single released in memory of Harry Patch this week we get a full blooded Radiohead release. No news yet as to whether this a proper new track or something hanging over from and old session or an upgrade of an idea they left behind. That of course doesn't matter, what does matter is whether this track is any good, and as usual you needn't have worried. The track opens with a twang of twisted guitar, it grabs your attention and for a second your mind thinks holy shit are Radiohead going back to being a rock band. However before that thought can fester a fast rhythmic skipping beat comes in and a georgeous haunting soundscape it conjured. It feels more ominous than In Rainbows but less awkward and less creepy than Kid A, it's wide open, with chimes of guitar, and opens shakes of abbrasive rhythem. It's an incredible spacious track, there's plenty going on to keep your attention but it's all about conjuring a mood. It's brooding and ominous, it's that perfect Radiohead balence between dark and uncomfortable and ethereal and beautiful. Tom Yorke's vocals are paradoxical, they serve as a stark contrast to the arrangement but somehow fit it perfectly. If we are to gather Radiohead's direction from the last two releases it suggests they be moving more towards the atomspheric. In Memory Of Harry Patch and These Are My Twisted Words both notably lack hooks, it's music to immerse yourself in rather than sing along to. It'll be interesting even at their most experimental Radiohead have always retained an ability to write irresistable hooks. The last two records suggest they are drifting off into the Brian Eno dimension. I have to say I for one am intrigued, this is beautiful, spacious, haunting music, that feels both fresh and suitably familar. Radiohead are showing no signs of slowing down.
