I Hate People - Jemina Pearl & Iggy Pop
So not many tears were shed when it was announced that Be Your Own Pet were no more. Sure when they burst onto the scene with Damn Damn Leash they felt like a force of nature, but we soon found out beneath their bullish gusto there were no real depth, no subtly, nothing to remember, to cling on to, ultimately little to love. So while Be Your Own Pet have been resigned to a historical footnote, Jemina Pearl refuses to go quietly into the night, and afterall, when we think back to the BYOP glory days (or just the BYOP days) she was always what excited, her energy, passion and sheer randomness. So now she's back with Iggy Pop, hoping he can give her the credibility rub he once gave to a wacky little lady by the name of Peaches. I Hate People is a glorious work of juaxtaposition, and any reader of my blog will know that I adore juaxtaposition and a cynical sense of humour. Jemina is in full fifties lovey dovey voice, it's actually somewhat reminisncant of Kate Jackson, actually this whole track reeks of a Long Blondes parody. She sings in sweet harmony and big smiley melodies over a cheesey 60s surf meets lounge hook. Now your probably thinking this is sounding like the most positively revoluting track of all time but it's by design as Jemina croons with delicious irony;
"Another lonely night, I think if I'm lucky I'll get into a fight...
Then what a surprise through the dull conversation and glazed over eyes,
There you were in all your glory,
I could tell that you wouldn't bore me,
Oh I hate people but Oh I like you"
It's utterly charming and difuses your critical sensors, it's the kind of wink and nod humour that made us fall for Courtney Love all those years ago. Ultimately, there's nothing new or particularly creative on display here, there's no reason for this song to exist at all, yet it's simple, funny and charming. A perfect track for summer, just switch your brain off and grin inanely.
