Daveportivo's Cultural Evaluation Facility

Music, Politics, Flim, Books and TV all shall be reviewed within.

180. Closer - Nine Inch Nails
(Interscope 1994, Flood & Trent Reznor)

"I Want To Fuck You Like An Animal" a simple sentiment that everyone can relate to. Sung over a wank jazz fusion bass line. It remains Trent's least interesting song but probably his most successful.

179. The Music Sounds Better With You - Stardust
(Roule 1998, Thomas Bangaltar)

Back in 1998 dance music was really blowing up and the French house scene was burgeoning. They say immitation is the sincerest form of flattery well I'm sure Daft Punk were pretty flatter to see Stardust's Daft-lite storm the charts.

178. Mulder And Scully - Catatonia
(Blanco Y Negro 1998, Tommy D)

Oh yes we can't have a decade without some welsh novelty rock can we. That's a bit harsh on the lovely (as in sweet) Cerys Mathews, and here we see her silly welsh croon at it's best. She's a funny little lady, another track that couldn't sound more ninities if it tried.

177. Sober - Tool
(Zoo 1993, Sylvia Massy)

A classic slice of Tool at their best, even better on the B side was the brilliantly conceptual themeatic Prison Sex and a live version of Intolerance. Is it just me or does this track sound a little like Kashmir?

176. No Diggity - Blackstreet
(Interscope 1996, Dr. Dre)

Another classic produced by Dr. Dre, again another track that sounds distinctively 90s, and a classic puppet based video to boot.

175. Killing Me Softly - Fugees
(Ruff House 1996, Fugees)

A cover version that shot straight to number one, so what if it represented a pussification of their music, this was an inresistable pop bullet aimed straight for the top spot. Shame about the cringe inducing "One Time, Two Times".

174. Everything Must Go - Manic Street Preachers
(Epic 1996, Mike Hedges)

A great track that highlighting the Manics at the top of their pop star game throwing out top ten singles effortlessly.

173. Pumping On Your Stereo - Supergrass
(Parlophone 1999, John Cornfield)

Wow indie in the nineties was bad, luckily when Sugergrass released this their only tolerable track The Strokes were already waiting around the corner

172. Velouria - Pixies
(4AD 1990, Gil Norton)

The Pixies showing off their surfaramma pop hit making credentials with their last Big single and a superbly silly video.

171. Driftwood - Travis
(Independiente 1999, Nigel Godrich)

Yes it's the only Travis song it's okay to like.

170. Voodoo People - Prodigy
(XL 1994, Liam Howlett)

A big crunching Prodigy club banger. You know this is Maxim's favorite track.

169. The Memory Remains - Metallica
(Elektra 1997, Bob Rock)

Boy oh Boy the 90s were a rough decade for Metallica, while Load and Reload are pretty much unforgivable they did give us this ludicrious sing along. Featuring James Heftfeild's silly voice at it's best.

168. Nookie - Limp Bizkit
(Interscope 1999, Scott Weiland)

Unfortuantely Limp Bizkit's one good song Break Stuff came out in 2000 so instead your treated to Limp's most retarded song. I'm too sicken to speak any further on the matter.

167. Glory Box - Portishead
(Go! 1995, Portishead)

My god how did the beautiful and brilliant Glory Box by Portishead end up next to the hallmark of 90s idiocy Nookie? Yes I know I compiled this list, It doesn't stop me feeling bad about it.

166. Wonderwall - Oasis
(Creation 1995, Owen Morris)

This only got to number 2! Some people thought that was tragic I thought it was hilarious. Classic ballad and chorus no doubt but it's just too smultzy and lame for belief.

165. Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem) - Jay Z
(Roc-A-Fella 1998, The 45 King)

The track that took Jay Z from rap star to world wide pop phenominon. It may grate on repeatedly listens but it still a land mark record. And one of the most memorable beats in hip hop history.

164. Gin & Juice - Snoop Dogg
(Death Row 1994, Dr. Dre)

More genius production from Dr. Dre, many of you may know that I've never really been a fan of Snoop but it'd be foolhardy to try and deny his greatest anthem a place in the top 200.

163. The Dope Show - Marilyn Manson
(Interscope 1998, Michael Beinhorn)

Marilyn Manson was always better at being and pop star and an icon than as an artist. As a result he put together a string of superb and "controversal" singles. The Dope Show with it's video incaptulates the best of Manson the hit maker and as the God of Fuck shock rocker.

162. Come To Daddy - Aphex Twin
(Warp 1997, Richard D. James)

Aphex Twin made some weird fucking music and some even weirder fucking videos. Come To Daddy was more than an awesome video it was a killer drum line driving a monster club anthem.

161. This Is Hardcore - Pulp
(Island 1998, Chris Thomas)

A huge haunting arrangement with a big horn section, some creepy fading fragile vocals from Jarvis Cocker and some of the best lyrics he's ever written ("Leave On Your Make Up And I'll Leave On The Light"). Tongue in cheek? Probably. Brilliant? Definitely. Great Video Too.

About this blog

This is your one stop shop of pop culture reviews I most specialize in Music, Politics & Film. I occasionally delve into TV reviews. I've got a Politics MA and a War Studies BA, I'm taking a year out before starting a Phd so when it comes to History and Politics I'm pretty well versed but I tend to keep this blog fun rather than serious.
