Me 'N' My (Up In Da Club) - Eve
So Eve surprised us all by taking a giant leap from mid level R'n'B star to world wide chart topper with the dance sensation Tambourine. Much like Dizzee Rascal she's clearly given up on what brought her recognition in the first place (there respective MCing skills) and become the Queen of the dancefloor. Me 'n' My is certainly less family friendly than Tambourine, it replaces the infectious hook with in your face attitude. The beat feels like something that was left on the cutting room floor by the Prodigy in the 1990s. It's an interesting choice as the beat pulsates captivatingly but it's at odds with current trends. Recent dance smashes have been more cheery and light hearted, with goofy beats, but this is more serious, agressive and ominous. The hook "Never Knew A Bitch Like You Could Dance!...Me and my bitches up in the club" is hardly charming, and while I can see some considering it cool, it's all too cynical for me. The track does have some great lines, the undoubted highlight is when Eve in her most in your face patronizing tones demands "Talk with you body mummy, not your voice". It's all trying a bit too hard, it certainly has potential to fly to number one but if it gets heavily censored for TV and Radio it's hardly going to translate. So I'm torn, it's cynical and hackneyed but it's also pretty damn infectious. It doesn't have the difusing charm of Tambourine and will be a devisive love it or hate it track.
The track keeps being taken down but you can hear it here: http://hypem.com/search/eve%20me%20n%20my/1/
