Rising Above 2007
.
Dave Prazak does his usual introduction telling us that ROH is Rising Above. Lenny tells us that you never know whats gonna happen tonight and we have cameras all around the backstage area.
.
We then seen Steen and Generico its a pretty funny little promo about how they love fighting and how dirty it is. In the ring Pearce cuts them off saying "who cares what's going on backstage" and Pearce addresses Delirious and dares him to face Brent Albright who takes of his hat to reveal a torn delirious mask.
.
Then the most proffesional an excellent ROH video introduction plays to Slayers reign in blood.

Good opener, Albright still wrestles like a Green WWE wrestler but this was solid action. (**1/4)
.
The Hangman3 start a beat down but Steen and Generico make the save, the Age Of The Fall then run out and start to cut a promo but that's interupted by the vulture squad who want a four team scramble match.

.

That was a perfectly good women's three way, again more of a fast pace moves collection than a straight upmatch. Good showcase with two really impressive spots. (**1/4)

More of an angle than a match, the match started intense but completely lost passion after the second minute. (**3/4)
.
The crowd chant "you can't wrestle" to Puwter, Stevens gets on the mic and makes fun of Puwter and says he's proved nothing to the ROH fans and challenges him to get in the ring. The crowd chant "Your Not Tuff Enough". Larry Sweeney comes out saying he has some Wheeling and dealing to do, with sara Del Ray by his side. Larry says Puwter is one of the most dangerous men in the world, and that Puwter doesn't do anything for free. Larry says he only represents the best in the world like Sara. Larry asks Puwter to come to their private dressing room and says he can watch in comfort instead of being surrounded by all these "Scumbags". Larry then promises to win Claudio's contract tonight and to sell him down the river to Vince. We then get a big ruckus as Claudio tries to attack Sweeney but at the last minute after silliness Hero hits a big boot on Sweeney to make the save.

Claudio counters a Hero's Welcome into a Water slide but Hero counters into the Cravice but Castagnoli some how powers up and wins it with the Riccola bomb.
Again Hero seems far more interested in getting his character over as per usual but that was pretty incredible finishing sequence. (***)
.
Age of the Fall then cut a promo saying if your tried of your pathetic everyday life you should join the revolution and he says the Briscoes know where to find him.
.
Relaxed Rules

Morishima rakes Danielson's face across the top rope and then stands on Dragon's throat. The referee gives Danielson a count but he makes it to his feet. Morishima scores with a huge boot in the corner. Morishima runs into a boot and Danielson explodes with a running knee strike and a huge series of Stiff kicks and a triangle choke, Morishima tries to counter with a powerbomb but Dragon slips out and rains down elbows before running into a killer closeline. Takeshi scores with the back drop driver but Daneilson struggles to his feet and Morishima runs him down with a huge closeline and that gets 2.9999!. Danielson takes Morishima down and unloads with elbows and then forearms but Morishima rolls over and unloads with shots and they trade mounts and blows for a while. Danielson blocks a suplex so Takeshi destroys Dragon with a low blow and then stomps on Dragon's groin a million times. Takeshi drops the referee leading to a DQ. Officials run out and Takeshi gives the ref a backdrop Driver. Danielson then tries to blind Takeshi with a time keeper's hammer before the officials seperate then.
Well excellent grudge match. Turned into a brutal bloody fight immediately. I still have a problem with Morishima because while he is very talented he is also quite awkward and sells poorly. (***)
.
We then see the Hangman 3 and Vulture Squad on a split screen. Albright says Vulture Squad coast them the match earlier and they should go kick their arses. Pearce agrees and they set off, its all very hammy and like the Warriors movie.
.

No doubt this match very good but the finish felt anticlimatic and a little reigned in, but that's no bad thing. Strong Action Throughout. (***3/4).
.

Well that was an excellent match up with superb wrestling and some lovely well thought out sequences. The was something about the pacing and something about these two that doesn't quite click for a five star match but they are very very good. I am worried though everytime I watch Nigel in a main event twice against Danielson and twice against Aries someone takes an absolutely scary blow or blows to the head, it makes for an incredible visual but its far to dangerous and isn't nessecary. (****1/2).
.
All the tag teams go to war backstage, and then we see Nigel looking in the mirror and you see how scared and bruised his face is, and its incredibly brutal.
.
PPV Rating: Two good matches, one great match and plenty of solid action, not ROH's best show, but after watching Supercard of Honor (god I'm sick of having to spell honour incorrectly) everything pales in comparison. This was a still a strong offering that the main event more than carried. Solid Recommendation.
.
Bonus Features
.
Sunny Segment: Sara Del Ray, Lacey and Daizee Haze are in the ring before their three way match from the show when Back In Black hits and Sunny comes out to a big ovation. They offer a handshake and then beatdown Luke who does some of the worst selling in human history. Adam Pearce then makes fun of Lukes dance.
.
Jigsaw vs. Mitch Franklin vs. Necro Butcher vs. Matt Cross
Mitch Franklin has the live to win entrance music. Wow even though his look doesn't look polished now its amazing how much more credible a threat Matt Cross looks with the adition of a beard.
The crowd are slightly behind Necro but not really bothered. Everyone goes after Necro and stomp on his feet. Matt Cross does his cool fake dive that Kofi stole but gets pulled to the outside by Necro. Jigsaw scores with a nice Gory Special on Mitch, Mitch comes back with a head scissors and a diving ranna and sends Jigsaw into the turn buckle. Franklin kills Jigsaw with a killer swinging DDT. Nerco is pounding the shit out of Cross on the outside tearing up the arena. Necro returns to the ring and knocks out Mitch Franklin with one punch for the pin. THAT WAS AWESOME. Necro Butcher absolutely kills Jigsaws with a closeline and then he thows his big chop, punch, chop, punch offense. Necro gets a body slam and a leg drop for two. Necro gets a running kick. Jigsaw blocks the tiger driver and they have a chop battle that Necro wins. Jigsaws selling is terrible. Jigsaw scores with two big diving kicks. Jigsaw unloads with a series of chops but runs into a big foot. Jigsaw comes back with an Enzenguri but Necro just kills him with a right hand and the Tiger Driver gets the win as the crowd chant "Necro".
You know a match sucks when the Necro Butcher is the best wrestler in the match. He actually looked like a star in this match next to three guys who are very green. (3/4*)
.
Naomichi Marufugi vs. Claudio Castagnoli
Marufugi gets a standing switch and then cartwheels and rolls into an arm wringer, but Claudio counters nicely into a hammerlock. Marufugi comes back with a drop toe hold and grabs a side headlock. They trade blows and Marufugi scores with the curb stomp and the seated superkick for a near fall. Claudio blocks the Sliced Bread putting Marufugi on the top rope and scores with a Super Release German suplex for a near fall. Marufugi counters the high angle German Suplex and scores with the Sliced Bread Number Two but both men are down. Marufugi gets the superkick, Claudio gets the Pump Kick and the Ricolla bomb but Marufugi makes the ropes at two and Marufugi gets a sneaky craddle for the win.
Well they definitely knew they were working a dark match and wrestler half pace but it was plain to see just how great of a wrestler Marufugi is. (**1/2).
.
Post match Sweet and Sour Inc. run in but Marufugi helps Claudio clear the ring leaving Claudio with Larry Sweeney. Daniel Puwter runs out to make the save and put Claudio in a Heel hook. Erik Stevens runs out and gets in his face, NRC run out and Strong says Stevens won't make it to their match tomorrow its "concussion time". The Vulture Squad run out and make the save and Jack scores with a 630 and Ruckus scores with a moonsault and half into a leg drop. Julius Smokes then has fun with the crowd. As does Evans.
.
We then get the preview of ROH Rising Above, its pretty good as Daizee Haze who is quite cute but pretty scared does a fun intrdoduction. I've got to remember to watch these bloody things first. We then see some action with lots of people brawling at once bringing all the faction warfare stuff to the fore. Delirious dives off top onto about ten men. Then Tyler Black gets a shooting star press plancha onto everyone, then Daizee Haze hits a top rope dive onto everyone. Necro Butcher scores with a cannon ball, then all three of the NRC hit impressive dives. Boy is this silly. Jigsaw hits a shooting star press to one side of the ring, Ruckus gets a front flip plancha and Jack gets the hand spring corkscrew. Then its back to Daizee being cute and saying this PPV has everything. Daizee then shows up how Aries got his Title shot. We see the conclusion of Danielson Aries which is very very good. With Aries scoring with the 450 to pick up the win. Daizee is still cute and very excited when we come back as she runs down the card.
.
We then get the newswire as Standard.
Overall Content: The PPV is very good and well worth checking out I have to say except for the Sunny and Lacey promos the extras are a let down, compared to the excellent matched given away on previous disk but nevertheless this is a top offering.

Delirious vs. Go Shiozaki
The crowd get a "Bah" chant going while the two face off. Go approaches neverously for the handshake and gets it before the ring bell gets Delirious goes delirious. Delirious and Go have some fun to start the match. We get a clean break in the corner to start the match and Delirious says "no chops". We get the headlock shoulder tackle spot to start the match but Go isn't going anywhere, hahahahha. Go fakes a chop to stop Delirious silliness as he bails to the outside and plays with the fans. Does he know what promotion he's wrestling for? Delirious gets a sunset flip for two before Go chops him down. Go then gets a running corner chop and then a stalling fisherman's buster for two. Go gets a body slam and a HUGE moonsault eats knees on the landing. Delirious unloads with a variety of strikes and then a leaping lariat. Delirious scores with a odd gut buster and a senton back splash for two. Go breaks up the Cobra clutch but when he charges he's drop toe held into the bottom rope. Delirious scores with the Panic attack but Go counters the Shadows over hell with a superkick!!! Go then scores with a stalling German suplex for two. Go gets a strike combo for two. Delirious then turns the kick out into the cobra stretch but Go makes the ropes. Go shrugs off a sloppy enzenguri and scores with a superkick for two. Go then rolls through a small package and scores with the Go Flasher (Stalling suplex into closeline) for the win.
Smart choice as opener. Not a stellar match by any means started slow and sloppy but had all the fun spots and chant along moments to get the crowd all warmed up, good finishing sequence. Go seems a odd and a good fit for WWE at the same time. (**1/2)
.
Larry Sweeney is talking about all the marketing oppurtunites he's getting here in Florida and how he's getting great offers for his clients but for now he has a little business to take care of.

FIP World Title
Erik Stevens vs. Roderick Strong
Stevens busts opens Strong's chest with some hard chops. Stevens takes Strong back to the ring where both men brawl and Roderick and Stevens floor the refere. Stevens then kills the ref with a big right hand and Strong gives Stevens a big slap as the crowd sarcastically chant "Roderick". The blood is really pouring out of Roderick's chest. He takes Stevens to the outside and just unloads with stiff chops and forearms. Strong puts a chair on Stevens' head and throws him face first into the ringpost. Stevens is now bleeding from the forehead as Strong continues to beat him around the outside. They return to the ring and Strong continues to slug away at the head of Stevens. Stevens then bites the head of Strong drawing blood and he licks it off his hand to which the crowd chant "You Sick Fuck". Stevens then tries the Choo Choo but runs into a boot and a lariat. Strong tries to unload but Stevens dodges a closeline and scores with the release german suplex, the Choo Choo and then a brutal lariat. Strong comes back with an absolutely brutal enzenguri and a killer Yakuza kick. The crowd chant "This is awesome". We then get a forearm battle, why you'd use a forearm rather than a punch in a match with no ref is beyond me. The fans Yay! Boo! along with the forearms. This goes on for quite awhile with each man smacking each other around until they flurry hit each over at the same time and then KO each other. Strong kills Stevens with a chairshot and the NRC are called to the ring. The NRC hold Stevens still and they use clippers and scissors to shave Steven's mohawk off. The crowd chant "Fuck you Roderick" as Strong stands on Stevens' chest posing with the match.
I suppose this was more of an angle than a match but is was a intense blood brawl with both men wailing on each other and really getting over teh hate they have for each other. (***)
.
We then get an excellent recap video on the excellent Age Of The Fall vs. Briscoes fued.

Jimmy Jacobs gets on the mic and says the revolution that is the Age of The Fall is here, they are the voice of the worthless and down troden. Jimmy says there was a homeless man in a wheel chair outside so rather than mock him they bought him a ticket and so he can have some fun. I didn't even notice the commentators had been run off in that exchange. Note to ECW (well if I had a time machine) if your gonna do a arena clearing crazy brawl spofest that is how its fucking done. That match was insane and both teams didn't even use their full complement of sick double team offence not even close. This was brilliant and that counter to finish the match simple has to be seen to be believed. (****1/4).
.
We then see Stevens covered in dried blood, with his messed up hair looking defected in the corner of the dressing room. The cameraman asks if he's okay and Stevens says if they think thats enough to stop him Roderick better think again.
.
The Age of The Fall are celebrating backstage and Lacey and Rain look really hot, Jimmy then says part one of their mission is accomplished, next they need their titles back, but first they have a plan to deal with Austin Aries. Lacey tells Jimmy she has a back up plan in case that doesn't work.
.

Hulk slugs back and they exchange chops and then kicks and knees. Generico hits a nice leaping leg lariat on Hulk for two as the crowd come to their feet. Kevin Steen tags in and pounds away on Hulk. Steen taunts BB knocking him down before letting him getting a tag before making more fun of BB. Generico comes back in but runs into a back elbow then a boot before Hulk scores with torpedo dropkick. Hulk then scores with a dropkick on Steen and pushes of Steen's chest and scores with a moonsault on Generico in an awesome spot. That was an insane match, it turned into a spotfest for the final section of the match but what a spot fest, the action was intense and incredible. BB Hulk nearly killed himself in this match and there were quite a few awkward moments and sloppy manouvers but to be honest who cares, I 100% agree with the crowd I hope Shingo & BB Hulk come back. (****1/4)
.
We then see silent footage of Erik Stevens shaving the remainder of his hair.
.

Nigel gets a European uppercut in the corner, he tries the run up uppercut but Aries cuts him off with a running forearm. Aries locks in the Last Chancery in the centre of the ring but Nigel breaks it with an eye rake. This time McGuinness gets the head of steam european uppercut. Aries counters a Lariat into the Crucifix Bomb which Nigel staggers through into a brutal Jaw breaker lariat for the win.
Well that was superb. The final half of that match was incredible and excellent. However while the first half was technically profficeint it lacked the intensity of the McGuinness-Danielson match and that of their previous encounter. These are of course minor minor quibbles in a thoroughly brilliant match up. My one mark against it was that Suicide Dive spot which was incredible but so scary it should not be done again, the crowd went from non stop chanting and cheering to absolute stunned is he dead silence, it doesn't need to be done, if he just missed on the ramp it would be sick enough, head first into a guard rail is just uncalled for. Great match. (****1/2)
.
The Age Of The Fall come out and Jacobs says it was Aries destiny to lose so Jimmy Jacobs could pick him up and be his own personal Jesus. Lacey takes over and say our words me nothing to him, the crowd chant "She's a Crack Whore" and Lacey retorts and your words mean nothing to me. Lacey promises to show that action speak louder than words and after an arguement from Jimmy she leads him to the back to a chant of "She's Got Herpies". Sunny's music hits, and says that was awesome but you must have lost your mind to accept her offer. Sunny has offered him money, fame and sex and you turned her down for this crack whore. Aries takes Lacey's hand and walks off. Rain attacks Sunny and the Briscoes run out to make the save. To a huge chant of "Man Up".
.
Nigel says the era of Austin Aries of over, he says he's the best wrestler in the world and Ring of Honors Ace. He tells everyone to bring it on if they think they are hard enough because he'll break your friggin jaw.

I didn't think so. Kid dodges a kick but has a Ranna blocked by Doi allowing Yoshino to hit a basement dropkick to Dragon Kid's face. Dragon Kid comes back with a slingshot Osaka Street cutter on Yoshino for two. Yohsino comes back with a mad spinning closeline for two as the crowd come to life. That was insane. I have a few critiques but I don't care this match will take your breath away watch it. (****3/4).
.
Overall Thoughts: Can a show be too stacked? On this evidence no fucking way four incredible matches stacked up in a row, as well as a brilliant set of angles with Strong and Age Of The Fall. This show is unfricken believable. Strongest imaginable recommendation.

Driven 2007
.
Its worth noting that I've watch this show before and enjoyed it immensely especially the excellent main event. This time I'll try to focus more on the flow of the matches and how the show held together as a PPV not just a stack of match.
.
Dave Prazak is in the centre of the ring and the sound is much improved but still a million miles from crystal. Prazak talks up Ring Of Honor before he's interupted by Erik Stevens, Matt Cross and Delirious. They demand a six man tag right now and then Delirious grabs the mic and shouts Bah Bah Bah. Well that might not have been smart as it would have turned off any new fans with the oddness of Delirious, although its probably their Knights of Cydonia moment, love it or leave it.
.
Opening Credits roll.

Well its our typical ROH none stop movefest with absolutely no selling going on in this one. It was pretty incredible to watch but of course instantly forgetable and incredibly interchangeable, only one botch not bad going. (***1/4).
.

That was a really nice match, I'm a real fan of Marufugi he has a very smooth style that looks impressive without ever doing anything really dangerous. The match created drama nicely without having to resort to non stop moves, the selling wasn't consistant but at least there was some. Good match. (***1/4)

Next its the absolutely lovely Becky Bayliss here to tell us about up coming ROH dates, what she's saying may be incredibly dull but darn she's so perky and cute frankly I just don't give a damn.

Well what can I say, there are plenty of artistic falls in the match but for a dramatic jaw dropping tag team match you'll be hard pressed to find better. The execution was uniformly excellent and the moves were incredible. (****1/2).
.

Perfection. This is my favorite match of all time it lost none of its impact on second viewing. Those headbutts were incredible but I'd be glad if I never saw anyone do that ever again. My only real wish is that it didn't end, my Match Of The Year 2007 by a country mile. (*****)
.
Overall Thoughts: Well I have my usual stylistic complaints wrestling wise and my regular suggestion about the presentation both of the DVD and the PPV, it still didn't feel quite like a PPV but none of that matters. If every match on the card had sucked dick I'd still tell you to buy this for the main event. This PPV is much better than that, the undercard is strong and alot of fun and the Semi Main Event could have carried the show in its own right but it was totally blown out of the water by that main event.

Well the final third of the match was strong but the first half dragged. While Hero is a great character and an impressive athelete he is too concerned with getting accross his character rather than the match and it makes his matches awkward. However once he gets in all action mode he's really good. Solid match with big crowd heat. (***)

.
Overall DVD thoughts: Well with three matches over four stars its hard to have anything but huge praise for this DVD. Nothing on this disk overstayed its welcome or disappointed and while the extras aren't as strong as the main feature it doesn't detract at all because it was nice of ROH to give you the extra matches in the first place. High recommendation a Match of the Year as well as two other must see matches.
